Kerala Sarees: A Traditional Attire of Kerala

Kerala Sarees are perfect to grace up every occasion in your life. The traditional wear of God’s own country, these sarees are a very simple saree with a golden border or coloured border on a cream saree. Kerala Sarees are weaved in both cotton and glazing tissue cotton materials with various design pattern like embroidery, block print and mirror work. Usually, the Kerala women wear this attire during the festivals, while visiting temples or for weddings. Mostly the traditional Kerala jewellery like palakka set or kasu mala set or mullamottu mala set goes well with Kerala saree.

Kerala Saris are also available in the silver border with matching motifs on it. These can pair with various blouse designs. There are a lot of innovative works done on the blouse designs these days. Brocade blouse with boat neck design is hugely popular now for various weddings.

Kerala Handloom Sarees

The Handloom saree in Kerala are called kaithari sarees in Malayalam. Kaithari in Malayalam means handwoven and handloom Kerala sarees are handwoven by the various communities in Kerala. Mainly there are three placed know for Kerala Handloom Sarees and are Kuthampully, Balaramapuram and Chendamangalam. Each of them has a unique style of weaving where Balaramapuram and Kuthampully are known for kasavu patterns and Chendamangalam is known for coloured borders with a matching colour stripe. These are a perfect addition to your wardrobe and preferred by many during the festivities.

Set Mundu

Set mundu or mundu veshti or mundum neriyathum is an elegant traditional women attire of Kerala. This has two pieces — mundu and veshti. Mundu is draped around the waist. Veshti is worn on the upper body similar to a saree and is the longest compared to mundu. Both will have a colourful border or a combination of golden zari and colour. Nowadays the border comes with various designs like mural paintings and is also available in silver. These garments are usually handloom.

Women wear set mundu mostly during special occasions like thiruvathira, onam, vishu etc. It is common to wear for temple visits. This is very light and comfortable wear and suits Kerala weather.
